Chautauqua was a grassroots adult education and social movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s offering access to new ideas and a diverse array of information. Under tents in the summertime, adults were exposed to new concepts and thought provoking speakers, and offered learning opportunities previously unavailable. Social change and governmental change occurred as a direct result.
